For athletes, a race is not the only demanding test: The Register-Guard, Eugene, Ore.

After her rousing victory in the women’s 10,000 meters late Friday night, Shalane Flanagan had only just begun her marathon evening.

For the next hour, she was paraded in front of the Hayward Field crowd, through the U.S.A. Track and Field officials’ tent and then toward the throng of media waiting to hear her speak. All the while, a USATF volunteer was close by, under orders by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency to watch Flanagan’s every post-race move, as is the case for all of the top athletes.

As she wrapped up her press conference, Flanagan hurried off the podium and toward the warm-up field. A handful of media members followed, hoping for a few more comments.
