Nothing appealing about 10,000 call - The Register-Guard

They don’t fault Adam Goucher, because he just wants to run. But they’d like to run, too.

Were you surprised that the first half of the U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials unfolded without incident? Would you have liked some bad blood between sprinters, or some sharp elbowing by the distance kids? Or maybe more from the mad hammer throwers? Was it just too smooth?

Welcome to the hullabaloo over the men’s 10,000 meters. After an appeal, Goucher’s in tonight’s race ahead of seven others with faster times. They’re not happy about it.

Wednesday and Thursday, the drama played out in meetings and on message boards. Back-room collusion was alleged. The swoosh was cursed. Lawsuits were threatened. Arbitration was scheduled, then canceled.

What in the name of Prefontaine is going on?

Quickly: Goucher, who trains with Alberto Salazar and Nike’s Oregon Project, has the 32nd-best time in the 10,000 meters (28:43.80, almost 30 seconds slower than the “A” standard necessary for automatic entry in the Trials). But after filing an appeal a couple of weeks ago, he was added to the start list — expanding the field from 24 to 25 runners.
