But it was Amy Yoder Begley who stole the show in the final of the women’s 10,000 meters on the first day of competition at the U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials. On a warm and muggy Friday night, before a record crowd of 20,964 at Hayward Field — well beyond the listed capacity of 16,350 — Flanagan, the U.S. record-holder, pulled away from Goucher with 300 meters to go to win the race in a time of 31 minutes, 34.81 seconds, beating Mary Slaney’s 26-year-old Hayward Field record of 31:35.30.
