Shalane Flanagan has the records, and Kara Goucher has the medal.

But it was Amy Yoder Begley who stole the show in the final of the women’s 10,000 meters on the first day of competition at the U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials.

On a warm and muggy Friday night, before a record crowd of 20,964 at Hayward Field — well beyond the listed capacity of 16,350 — Flanagan, the U.S. record-holder, pulled away from Goucher with 300 meters to go to win the race in a time of 31 minutes, 34.81 seconds, beating Mary Slaney’s 26-year-old Hayward Field record of 31:35.30.
