EUGENE -- With an even-keel mind-set befitting his Hawaiian home state, Bryan Clay took a calculated approach toward the final five events of the decathlon Monday.
Clay, the 2004 Olympic silver medalist, was far from pleased after Sunday's opening day -- despite a lead of 22 points. The frustration was there because Clay didn't come to Hayward Field to simply repeat as decathlon champion at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials. No, Clay planned on leaving as the U.S. record holder.
