The old coach was up late Monday night.

He was still awake in the wee hours of Tuesday morning, fielding phone calls, surveying text messages and responding to e-mails from all over the country.

They were talking about the men’s 800-meter final at the U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials on Monday, a race that transformed three hometown heroes into Olympians in front of nearly 21,000 crazed fans at Hayward Field.
