A top-four finish was all that Kerron Clement needed to advance out of the semifinals in the men’s 400-meter hurdles, but the reigning world champion knew the benefit of finishing first.

“It is very important to win the semifinals because it gives you the best lane for the final,” Clement said. “It puts you in the middle, lane 4 or 5.”
