7/6/08 Bobby Smith won the javelin Sunday, then found out he would be the only winner of an event at the U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials who won’t be going to the Olympic Games. A judge gave him the disappointing news at the conclusion of competition at Hayward Field, with the familiar explanation: He doesn’t have a mark that exceeds the “A” standard for the Olympics while two other competitors, second-place Mike Hazle and fifth-place finisher Leigh Smith, recorded marks of the needed distance earlier in the year and will compete in Beijing.
