One month ago, Vin Lananna stood on the upper balcony of the Bowerman Building on the northwest corner of Hayward Field, and watched the temporary bleachers on the opposite end of the track slowly rise into the sky.

He tried to imagine what the atmosphere would be like if an Oregon athlete were to be in contention for a berth on the U.S. Olympic team in front of thousands of adoring fans.
