When the sprinter John Capel first broached the idea of restarting his track career last year, with his two-year suspension from the sport for marijuana use nearing its end, his toughest critic voiced her doubts loudly and clearly.

As Capel discussed his potential comeback with his family, his 7-year-old daughter, Janya, found and read old newspaper articles about her father, who won a world championship in the 200 meters in 2003 before his drug use derailed his career. Janya demanded an explanation.
